When a high school athlete’s LGBT identity conflicts with the standards of who he has always been told to be, his regimented life begins to unravel.

The Riley Hollywood Movie (January 2025 Film), based on Howard’s personal experiences as a student-athlete, is semi-autobiographical and marks his debut. checks a lot of boxes in terms of coming-of-age films. On-screen, however, it is unvarnished and potent, unraveling the web of societal fear and preconceptions. First of all, this is the first feature film written and directed by Benjamin Howard, who previously explored sexuality in his shorts. This novel is inspired by his real-life experience being a high school football player, and how he battled to embrace who he truly was. His direction and script do not hold back. With the use of flashbacks and the individuals’ reactions, we explore a wide range of emotions to fully understand Howard’s childhood and that of many others.

Throughout the movie, we follow Dakota Riley as he navigates the fallout from suppressing his true self. Jake Holley does a fantastic job portraying Riley, giving us a heartfelt and candid performance. In difficult sequences, he exhibits both amazing power and tenderness, demonstrating his acting prowess. Riley Quinn Scott and Colin McCalla, who portray his girlfriend and best buddy, join him. Whoa, the characters take us on such a wild ride. Riley, who yearns for closeness and understanding, struggles with how others see him and how he treats the people he cares about. We are just as perplexed as he is, unsure of their true feelings and desires. Although sex is a major issue in the movie, it is always handled respectfully by the characters who are engaged. I think McCalla’s plot is the most intriguing. We witness masculinity being broken down when playing a fellow football player, but it is never completely exposed to validation. Like Riley, we are frequently perplexed by the distinctions between the fraternity and affection that these two friends have, even when Howard flirts with us.

All of the relationships are exquisitely portrayed and brilliantly brought to life. I thought it was great that Riley let us explore and that we watched him deal with the world and his feelings for individuals as they changed over his life. The difficult path was frequently chosen, and the circumstances were not simple. The fact that I was unsure of Riley’s story’s conclusion made it an emotional viewing. Would he continue dating the girl? Would he date the man? It was a brilliant approach to continually reminding us of Howard’s real tale and the fact that we are more than caricatures by having football flicker throughout.
