Ever since she first encountered Rule Archer, Shaw Landon has had feelings for him. Rule has never understood Shaw’s deeper feelings and has always treated her like a family friend despite their strong bond. Shaw’s life as an affluent pre-med student starkly contrasts Rule’s existence as a tattoo artist with a fierce temper. After an unexpectedly intimate night, they are forced to face their own emotions and negotiate the difficulties of their disparate upbringings and familial expectations.
Twelve years ago, Jay Crownover’s “Rule,” a story about a decent girl who tames a wicked boy, created a sensation among romance novel readers and spawned five interconnected sequels. Their general title, “Marked Men,” alludes to tattoos, a recurring theme in the prolific author’s various follow-up works. “Marked Men: Rule + Shaw” is a screen adaptation that focuses on the first installment of the sextet while supposedly drawing from the entire series.
The question mark at the end of these roughly 90 minutes, which are showing in theatres throughout the country in January, is whether or not this Fathom Events release will lead to sequels. 22 and 23. Fans of Crownover are thrilled with how she adds above-average character depth to the genre’s typical “spicy” material standards. However, neither of those attributes is very evident in Nick Cassavetes’ film “The Notebook,” which is a rather simple diversion, albeit one that is as emotionally shallow as a kiddie pool and disappointingly lacking in sexy time and chemistry between leads Sydney Taylor and Chase Stokes. Its level of vicarious friskiness doesn’t even approach that of an old “Red Shoes Diaries” rerun, so anyone who isn’t already familiar with the scribe’s print work is unlikely to want more of what they’ll get here.

Nick Cassavetes is the director, and Sharon Soboil is the writer of the 2025 American romantic drama film Marked Men: Rule + Shaw. It is an adaption of Rule, a 2012 book by Jay Crownover that is a part of the Marked Men series. Sydney Taylor plays Shaw Landon, a pre-med student from a wealthy background, and Chase Stokes plays Rule Archer, a rebellious tattoo artist. Natalie Alyn Lind, Ella Balinska, and Alexander Ludwig are in the supporting cast. On January 22, 2025, a limited theatrical run of the movie was released.
Marked Men: Rule + Shaw was revealed to be directed by Nick Cassavetes in November 2024. The screenplay, which was adapted from Jay Crownover’s novel by Sharon Soboil, was also announced. George Kallis wrote the music for the movie.

There are no words to express how thrilled I was to see this film! I read this book in 2013, and I eventually finished reading Asa, the final book in the Marked Men series, in 2023. I went on to finish all of Jay’s works in this universe, including Forever Marked, The Point, and The Saints of Denver. After more than a decade of falling in love with Rule’s persona, I was thrilled when he was finally brought to life. One of my favorite love stories was that of Shaw and Rule, and Sydney and Chase both did a fantastic job. The wait was well worth it, Jay. I hope you are extremely proud of yourself for making your book a reality.

As a lover of the author, the book, and the other books in the series, I thought the movie was fantastic! Because of Jet and Ayden’s incredible connection, I am looking forward to the second movie. I loved Rule & Shaw, and I think the movie did the book credit. I’m excited to watch it again when it comes out, preferably on Apple TV or Prime. I thought the main characters’ chemistry was fantastic, and I adored every detail. The interactions between Rule and Shaw, as well as the supporting cast, were fantastic. There were undoubtedly some differences between the book and the movie, but I was prepared for that. A ten out of ten.

Years ago, I read this novel. I was thrilled to learn that it would be made into a movie because I had read the book and enjoyed it. Since films and literature are never the same, I was naturally concerned. However, I must admit that I think they did an amazing job. Displaying these figures on the screen. No, there are variances between it and the novel, but I still think they did a good job of capturing it. I liked the film, and I hope they keep making these marksmen and tell us all of their tales. I would like to see Remy, but I know Jet would come next.

For our first girls’ night out in 2025, my two adult nieces and I went to see the movie Marked Men: Rule + Shaw tonight, Wednesday, January 22, 2025. We had the whole theatre, room 6, at Regal Arbour Place 18 in Douglasville, GA, to ourselves, and we had a great time. Sydney Taylor, Chase Stokes, and the entire cast did an amazing job bringing this film to life. We sincerely hope that it will soon be available on DVD and streaming services so we may watch it again. It was the best night of my year so far, and I’m so happy I had someone cover my shift at work so I could watch this in the theatre while I could.
