Watching a little film by little-known actors and directors and realizing for a few minutes that you’re witnessing the type of picture that begins several (hopefully lengthy) careers is a unique kind of joy. For me, “I Love You Forever (2025 Film)” was that type of moment. It centers on a close-knit group of twentysomething Detroiters whose complacent navel-gazing is upended by a shady affair between one of the group’s young ladies and a man who is everything she has ever desired and might potentially ruin her life. It’s a comedy, which is amazing. For the most part.
Mackenzie (Sofia Black-D’Elia), the young lady, is a dedicated law student about to start her last year of study. A local newsreader named Finn (Ray Nicholson) meets Mackenzie at her best friend Abby’s (Cazzie David) birthday party and displays his unique talent for flirting. Because of their obvious chemistry, Finn offers Mackenzie his phone number, waits for her to call, and then takes her to the most romantic supper of her life, beginning a narrative of love that will last a lifetime.

Or at least that’s how Mackenzie feels. Over the years, her frequent hookups with Jake (Raymond Cham Jr.) deteriorated her already low expectations for males. Jake is egotistical, careless, uninterested in commitment, and only shows interest in Mackenzie during sexual encounters. He is referred to by Ally as “a human vape pen.” Despite this, Mackenzie still pitifully wishes he to be her lover.
She finally receives what she has always desired when Finn woos her: a man who shows her love and care and makes her feel like the center of his universe. However, it’s a “monkey’s paw” kind of satisfaction. Practical. Finn’s early portrayal as a handsome, somewhat renowned prince turns into something more problematic, and he is a little monster of neediness. He is a stone in her shoe that she is unable to remove, and it just becomes sharper and bigger. Finn’s neediness may be both passive-aggressive and outright confrontational at times. She is always on edge due to his controlling, demanding outbursts, which makes it difficult for her to concentrate on any other significant aspect of her life, including education. She often nods off and looks nervously at her phone, whether in class or during a get-together with friends. She anticipates receiving a text from Finn that will demand her quick attention and hold it for hours or days, knowing that it will show up at the most inconvenient time.

“I Love You Forever (2025 Film)” is not a true crime or case study film, the kind that begins with idyllic scenes and concludes with the lead actress in a trial, a shelter, a hospital, or a tomb. It’s a realistic portrayal of a more commonplace form of suffering: a relationship that starts as mildly terrible and continues to deteriorate. Finn never touches Mackenzie out of rage. However, he does sulk, scream, and manipulate, and occasionally he may destroy objects or cry. Is he suffering from an unidentified mental illness? Although it’s not stated in the film, we wonder.
Despite knowing that she should end her relationship with Finn, Mackenzie refuses to do so. Why? It is implied that she would prefer the worst form of romantic attention to none at all since she has required it for so long. She also punishes herself for causing Finn to behave in this manner and, despite all the facts, thinks that she can save him or save himself.

I have focused on the story’s more dramatic and unsettling aspects. However, I don’t want to convey that “II Love You Forever (2025 Film)” is a depressing song since it isn’t. Its ability to smoothly transition between intense and frequently emotional confrontations, wordless psychological insights into characters as they sit and contemplate their circumstances, and scathing, frequently intentionally satirical dialogue that drives the characters to the verge of cartoonishness (“If you’re not gonna do therapy, can you at least look at the Tik Toks I sent you?”) is what’s most amazing. Then, abruptly, it retreats from the edge and gives them their warmth and dimensionality again, or, despite everything, reminds you of how very strange and unique they are. (In one scenario, Ally attends a sidewalk brunch with her curling iron and says, “I didn’t want to worry about leaving it on at home all day.”
Even in the tiniest roles, the cast consistently performs well. Together with the perceptive prose, their performances paint a picture of a particular era, location, and population. The majority of the film is driven by dialogue, but when it switches to a more impressionistic style—typically by concentrating on the faces of characters as they respond to their surroundings or reflect on their current circumstances—it demonstrates a talent for subjective filmmaking that is just as evident as its talent for conversation.

The second half of the film begins to repeat itself, and it ends rather abruptly with what seems like a bleakly humorous punchline. However, it may make you wonder how much deeper the story could have been if it had spent more time on Mackenzie’s response to having gone through it and less time on Finn and Mackenzie’s downward spiral. It’s hard to top as a showcase for up-and-coming American talent. When it was at its finest, it reminded me of a harsher, more glassy-eyed, 21st-century version of the films that Whit Stillman and Noah Baumbach have produced. Even if the people there look like pompous, wealthy, self-centered twits at first, you end yourself caring for them. Even if their lives aren’t comparable, their fantasies are.

They will be a part of you that will get more out of Mackenzie’s enlightenment moment, even if you must respect the movie for keeping to its principles. Between eerie and humorous, David and Kalani frequently go towards the former. I Love You Forever (2025 Film) quickly devolves into a dull and almost unwatchable account of the agonizingly inevitable breakdown of a poisonous relationship. As trauma bonding, psychological abuse, and low self-esteem compete for screen time, romance is not an option. It looks to wallow in its agony and anguish without offering a way to gain empathy or a deeper connection, yet successfully subverting millennial romcom clichés.
The writing is crisp and the performances are excellent throughout, notably the marvelously sarcastic Rudnitsky, but not everything here works, especially in the way the friend characters respond to the situation after it escalates. In this independent romance tale, Prince Charming soon becomes Prince Creepy. I Love You Forever (2025 Film) portrays an abusive relationship as though it were real. It’s a disconcerting mashup of humor and emotional misery that is both disgusting and unfunny. It is sufficient for viewers to become agitated. Since we don’t know how it will end, I LOVE YOU FOREVER is a more captivating drama. The conclusion, however, is a doozie. The script by David and Kalani is insightful, thought-provoking, occasionally humorous, and frequently embarrassing.
The film’s intriguing aspect is the way the tone changes… till it’s hard to recall how casually and light-heartedly the story starts. It’s a realistic portrayal of a more commonplace form of suffering: a relationship that starts as mildly terrible and continues to deteriorate. The way this film balances the seriousness of the subject matter with its really powerful comedy is just amazing. An amazing look at the progression of emotional and psychological manipulation. I Love You Forever (2025 Film) takes you on a journey through a poisonous relationship, transforming what begins as a charming romantic comedy into a radical genre change.
In reality, I Love You Forever (2025 Film) plays on the hidden dread of many young, straight, unmarried women: that any man who treats us like the main character in a 90s romantic comedy is insane. This film burns itself out too quickly, circling the same relationship themes and, worst of all, not giving its protagonist enough nuance to make spending so much time with her worthwhile. This is a feel-bad film, so if that’s the intention, then it’s a success, no matter how depressing. I Love You Forever offers insight into the tragedy of an agonizing, perplexing, and chaotically violent relationship and is a terrible yet essential societal commentary on dating today.
