Companion Hollywood Movie (January 2025 Film) Summary
Iris, a young woman, remembers her first encounter with her boyfriend Josh. They later go to a remote lakehouse where they meet up with friends Kat, Eli, and Patrick, and Sergey, Kat’s lover and the home’s owner. Iris murders Sergey in self-defense as he tries to sexually assault her at the lake the following day. Panicked and covered in blood, she heads back to the house. When Josh says, “Iris, go to sleep,” she passes out.
Josh tells Iris, who wakes up strapped to a chair, that she is a Companion Hollywood Movie (January 2025 Film) robot he is renting from the robotics company Empathic and that an app on his phone can manage her intelligence and emotions. Iris escapes when Josh is preoccupied, takes Josh’s phone, and runs away into a neighboring woodland to increase her IQ from 40% to 100%. To get Iris to kill Sergey and allow Josh and Kat to steal $12 million from his safe, Josh confesses to Eli and Patrick that he jail-broke her with an aftermarket modification that increased her degree of anger and rendered her incapable of harming anyone. Josh and Kat maintain that Patrick shouldn’t get a portion of the money because he is also a companion, even though Eli and Patrick were asked to support their account.

After Eli steals a revolver from Sergey’s safe, the group disperses to look for Iris, where Patrick confesses that he loves Eli despite knowing he’s a companion. Iris is located by Patrick and Eli, but during a scuffle, she uses the revolver to kill Eli. Josh uses Sergey’s phone to report the car as stolen, which causes it to stop and lock Iris in when she tries to flee in his self-driving car. Josh makes Patrick his friend again, turns off his ability to hurt people, makes him more aggressive, and orders him to locate and bring back Iris.
When Iris breaks out of the car, a police officer stops her, but Patrick, who has become more violent, kills the officer and takes Iris back to the house. Disgusted by Josh, Kat tries to take her share of the money and leaves, but Patrick murders her. Josh yells at Iris for being a “nice guy” after calling Empathix to come get an imprisoned Iris, saying she is malfunctioning. He reduces Iris’s intelligence to zero when she belittles him, turning her into an automaton. He then makes her burn her arm with a candle before telling her to shoot herself in the head, which she does, shutting herself down.

When they get there, Empathix employees Sid and Teddy tell Josh that the shot simply stopped Iris’s Wi-Fi from working and that Empathix robots record everything they encounter, storing the recordings in the abdominal region. Josh gives Patrick the order to murder the employees and get Iris back. Iris completely reboots and persuades Patrick to spare Teddy by reminding him of his love for Eli before he can kill Teddy, even though Patrick kills Sid. Heartbroken, Patrick uses an electric prod to end his own life.
Iris is released from the app’s influence and given complete authority over herself by a thankful Teddy. After returning home, Iris uses an electric corkscrew to kill Josh after a scuffle. She removes the scorched “skin” from her palm the following morning, revealing the metal gear underneath. She sees another man driving with a friend who is exactly like her as she takes off with Sergey’s money. To the other companion’s perplexity, Iris waves her prosthetic hand while grinning.

Companion Hollywood Movie (January 2025 Film) Reviews
Yashhraaj Barman
The compelling horror and science fiction film Companion (2025), which was written and directed by Drew Hancock, takes the traditional cabin-in-the-woods cliché and gives it a terrifying AI twist. The movie, which stars Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid, centers on a group of friends on a tranquil retreat that devolves into a nightmare when it is discovered that one of them is a companion robot—made to help but now dangerously malfunctioning. The picture keeps viewers on edge from beginning to end, with supporting performances from Rupert Friend, Harvey Guillén, Megan Suri, and Lukas Gauge.
Companion’s spooky atmosphere and well-paced suspense captivate the spectator from the opening scene. Despite occasional slight lulls, the movie keeps up a constant pace.

Companion briefly suggests that, like Alex Garland’s Ex Machina, it will explore the moral, ethical, and philosophical ramifications of close human/robot relationships. However, following a sly opening act, the film concentrates on its true purpose, which is black comedy akin to a Coen brothers film. (Consider the scenario in which they guest-directed a Westworld episode.) Episodes of shocking, violent violence that are also humorous are the outcome of characters acting foolishly. The fairly enigmatic setting of the film is rendered entirely unimportant by this change of events, which suggests that the script was significantly altered before filming.

This movie is fantastic. Yes, other films are similar to this one, but this one has enough of a distinct plot and delivery to set it apart from its forerunners. This fast-paced voyage will make you laugh, weep, and sit on the edge of your seat with anticipation!
The general allegory the film makes references to throughout is something I don’t see many of these reviewers mentioning. This film will resonate with women who have experienced abuse or narcissism from their partners. Now, there are major spoilers, such as the movie’s conclusion.
Kelsea Caldwell
I thought this movie was great. It had a coherent plot progression, was entertaining, suspenseful at the appropriate times, and was captivating—all of which are sometimes difficult to find in higher-concept films.
I should also mention that I thought it was great how the trailer, or the one I saw, piqued attention without revealing any important story details. When I watch a movie trailer and feel as though I’ve seen the entire film, it’s annoying. It was enjoyable and refreshing to enter the film with a very basic notion of what I expected it to be—enough to stimulate my curiosity or generate my theories—and then be continuously taken aback by revelations that exceeded all of my expectations.
