The 2025 American animated action comedy Dog Man Hollywood Movie (January 2025 Film) is based on the children’s graphic novel series of the same name by Dav Pilkey. It is a spin-off and narrative inside a story of Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (2017), the second movie in the Captain Underpants franchise, and was produced by DreamWorks Animation and released by Universal Pictures. The voices of Pete Davidson, Lil Rel Howery, Isla Fisher, Poppy Liu, Stephen Root, Billy Boyd, and Ricky Gervais appear in the film, which was written and directed by Peter Hastings. Hastings also provides vocal effects for the title character. The first, third, and seventh Dog Man books are all roughly adapted in the movie.
In December 2020, Dream Works Animation announced that Hastings would direct the Dog Man Hollywood Movie (January 2025 Film), following his success with Pilkey’s work on The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants (2018–20). Oklahoma City is regularly terrorized by a malevolent orange cat named Petey, who has a plan to blow up an abandoned warehouse by laying a bomb. The bomb explodes as renowned police officer Knight and his dog Greg come to defuse it, seriously wounding both Knight’s head and Greg’s body. Knight and Greg are saved by two surgeons who create the dog-human hybrid Dog Man by sewing Greg’s head onto Knight’s torso. Dog Man’s frequent arrests of Petey rapidly win him popularity and spark a fierce rivalry between the two, but the loss of his owner, girlfriend, and home causes him to feel lonely and miserable. He moves into a doghouse on the outskirts of the city with a tennis ball he used to play with.

Petey chooses to clone himself to produce an assistant who is exactly like him after firing his helper. Due to Petey’s misreading of the instructions, a replica of him is produced, whom he refers to as Li’l Petey, an innocent child who has no interest in mischief. Petey intends to utilize Living Spray to bring Flippy back to life and defeat Dog Man after stealing his corpse. However, Li’l Petey gets in the way. Dog Man finds him and chooses to adopt him after Petey leaves him in a cardboard box in the middle of the city.
Petey finds a picture book at his hideout that was illustrated by Li’l Petey and shows the two of them together as a family. Feeling bad, Petey kidnaps him with his 80-HD, an orb-shaped mech. Petey tells his clone that he was abandoned as a child by his violent father. Li’l Petey brings Petey’s father, whom he calls Grampa, to his lair using 80-HD to lift his spirits. Despite Li’l Petey’s wishes, Grampa has not changed and begins scolding Petey right away.
After being mistreated by the workers at the Living Spray factory, Flippy is brought back to life, which also makes the plant itself come to life. After Petey reprogrammed him to destroy all good deeds, he attacked Dog Man and his companions as they battled a swarm of Living Spray-affected structures. Unwillingly, Petey chooses to work with Dog Man, replacing Li’l Petey within 80-HD with himself. When Li’l Petey shows up and shows him a comic book that shows them as friends, Flippy is persuaded to change his bad ways and stop dropping him into a volcano. To prevent Petey from falling into the lava, Dog Man gives up his old tennis ball.

Petey is pardoned as a do-gooder for his acts, while Flippy is arrested. He and Li’l Petey, refusing to be viewed as do-gooders, return to their lair to discover that everything was taken by Grampa, except Li’l Petey’s books. After deciding to give Dog Man joint custody of his son, Petey returns home with a fresh perspective on life.

Following his familiarity with Dav Pilkey’s work from The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants (2018–20), Peter Hastings was brought on board to helm the feature, which DreamWorks on Animation’s Dog Man Hollywood Movie (January 2025 Film) (DWA) revealed was in development on December 9, 2020. The film is based on the Captain Underpants spin-off graphic novel seriesDog Man Hollywood Movie (January 2025 Film). After announcing the release date, DreamWorks revealed that Karen Foster will be producing on January 29, 2024. The voice cast of the movie was announced to include Pete Davidson, Lil Rel Howery, Isla Fisher, Poppy Liu, Stephen Root, Billy Boyd, and Ricky Gervais when the first trailer was released on September 17, 2024

On October 6, 2023, it was announced that the Dog Man Hollywood Movie (January 2025 Film) and Gabby’s Dollhouse would play on the big screen in 2025. Except for Sony Pictures Imageworks, which was announced as The Bad Guys 2’s animation partner, the whole film would be animated at partner studios. The film’s animation is handled by Jellyfish Pictures, which previously animated DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming (2019) and Spirit Untamed (2021), marketed custom animation for Trolls World Tour (2020), and provided additional production assets for The Boss Baby: Family Business (2021), The Bad Guys (2022), and Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024). I enjoyed the Dog Man Hollywood Movie (January 2025 Film)! I was thrilled to see the trailer for the Dog Man movie because I am a huge admirer of the books! I saw the film yesterday, and it was excellent! The third novel, which introduced Little Petey, served as the basis for the film. Never in my life have I laughed so hard at a film, and I’m not exaggerating when I say that this one is hilarious. Although I believe that Grandpa didn’t contribute much to the plot, he did include a touching conversation with Petey and Lil Petey, so even that has advantages. Lil Petey was the character I was most concerned about, but his design was excellent as well.
I adore how seamlessly they transferred the characters from 2D to 3D! With a reduced frame rate and a seamless blend of 2D and 3D, the film’s incredible animation truly makes it feel like a Dog Man novel come to life. From Pete Davidson to Lil Rel Howrey, every single voice actor was incredible, which is why I adore voice acting so much! Finally, although the tale was straightforward, it fulfilled its objective: to provide the protagonists with an adventure. In essence, Petey makes a clone of himself, believing that it will be wicked and completely corrupt.

Being a major admirer of the books as a child, I was ecstatic inside because Dog Man Hollywood Movie (January 2025 Film) perfectly captured the spirit of the novels. When I was seven years old, I always wanted a Dog Man movie, so seeing that dream come true on the big screen brought back a lot of good memories.
The animation and artwork seem like a great fit for this film. The soundtrack could not have been better, and I think the first few minutes were the greatest. All of the jokes were very dog-man-like and quite brilliant. I’m happy that the same people who made the Captain Underpants film were able to develop Dog Man as well, since DreamWorks has some great kid-friendly films.

The animation is amazing; it combines exciting action with a light-hearted, comic-book aesthetic that is both novel and captivating. The characters have a lot of individuality, and the humor is appropriate for both children and adults. The same endearing spirit that made the novels so fantastic is brought by Dog Man, Lil’ Petey, and the entire group.
Although they did include parts from other books, they did it in a way that kept the plot engaging and moving quickly! The themes of friendship, atonement, and creativity are brilliantly conveyed, and the poignant moments—particularly with Petey’s father—hit hard.

Nevertheless, it’s a fantastic option for a weekend excursion if you have young children. It’s lively, quick-paced, and has plenty of humor, which will keep kids occupied and make parents chuckle a little, too.
